Documenting coeliac disease - who was Aretaeus?
An understanding of coeliac disease first began in the second century BC when Aretaeus of Cappadocia in Greece wrote and described many diseases with incredible accuracy. Following the methods of Hippocrates, he was the first to document coeliac disease. His observations included diarrhoea, gassiness, wasting, weakness and pallor. Aretaeus called his patients by the Greek word koilakos, which meant ’suffering in the bowels’. In the translation of his writings by Francis Adams in 1856, ‘koilakos’ was translated to ‘celiacs’.
Our Bequest Program, which will help to change the future for people with coeliac disease, is named after Aretaeus in recognition of his pioneering work in this field.
Your Bequest - changing the future of coeliac disease
By naming the Coeliac Research Fund in your Will and letting us know, you are helping us to improve the awareness, diagnosis and research of coeliac disease. Your very special gift provides the CRF with long term financial sustainability and allows important projects to be planned and carried out in the future. Leaving a Bequest now ensures that you will make a difference in the future to those suffering from coeliac disease without affecting your current financial situation.
The following is a suggested bequest clause, however, we recommend that you seek the advice of an expert, such as a solicitor or trustee company, to help you draw up your Will.
“I bequeath the sum of ………… dollars and/or …..% of my residual estate to the Coeliac Research Fund to be used for any purpose connected with the Coeliac Research Fund (or coeliac disease awareness/diagnosis/ research depending on area of interest) for which the receipt of the Treasurer or Financial Officer shall be sufficient discharge to my Executor for the Bequest.”
If you are a supporter of the Coeliac Research Fund, perhaps you have already included us in your estate plans. If this is the case, thank you for your foresight and thoughtfulness.
We would appreciate it if you are able to let us know that you have made a bequest. Firstly, we would like to thank you for your generosity. Secondly, this knowledge helps us with our long term financial planning. We would also like to include you as an Aretaeus Bequest Society member.
Arateus Bequest Society members will be kept updated with details of events, important developments and initiatives of the Coeliac Research Fund. Members are also most welcome to become involved with our activities if they wish, providing the opportunity to get to know more about, and feel comfortable with, their choice of bequest organisation.
