Coeliac Awareness Week 2010 - Is your child out of sorts?

Coeliac Disease - is your child out of sorts?

‘Is your child out of sorts?” is the theme for Coeliac Awareness Week 2010 (which runs 13-20 March). Most people are very surprised to learn that coeliac disease typically starts in childhood between the ages of four and seven years old, although symptoms can occur at any age in a person’s life.

By improving diagnosis rates in our children, we can help thousands of people with untreated coeliac disease from suffering from the often debilitating effects of the condition as they grow into their teens and become adults.

In Australia today, the average age of diagnosis for someone with coeliac disease is 40 years old. At this age, most people with untreated coeliac disease have been feeling ill for a long time. If their condition has been untreated for many years, their risk of developing serious health complications in later life has also increased.

The ‘Is your child out of sorts?’ campaign aims to improve diagnosis rates in children which are currently very low. In fact, although at least 1 in 100 children have coeliac disease, four out of five of them are not diagnosed.
